Narratives …The Object of Art
2015, India, Documentary, 20 min
Masoom Gandhi is a filmmaker who has liked my work and wanted to make her first independent movie with her new unit about my work.
My request was simple. I did not want it to be like a CV of my work or life. I wanted her to respond to my ceramic work, my paintings, my architecture… and my Auroville.
She brought along a wonderfully talented, young team and this movie is the result of our interaction.
Sunayana has filmed it, making Auroville locales look magical. The sound engineering by Vasudha, using soundscapes from Aurelio / Swaram, has to be experienced. Madhav, Vivek and Anahita round it up.

The Hope Doctors
2015, India, Documentary, 51 min
The Hope Doctors is a bittersweet journey into the lives of ordinary people & their extraordinary worlds. Told through the lens of medical clowning, the film is a commentary on the current healthcare system that is fast losing touch with ideas of compassion. It questions the gaps plaguing our healthcare sector and interpolates the complex & starkly different worlds of two professional medical clowns.
Medical clowns work in tandem with the hospital staff, understanding the emotional needs of the patient and their physical disease. They are artistes trained to deal with emergency situations and medical scenarios that require a high level of skill and sensitivity. Advising the healthcare fraternity to step outside the narrow confines of clinical care and take an innovative look at counselling and patient-support, these clowns use laughter as a tool to infuse hospital spaces with joy and optimism. Whether it is a dreary cancer ward or a crowded hospital dorm, they aim to reach out to those stuck in the most challenging of medical scenarios with theatre & performance as psychosocial counselling strategies. Will their unconventional approach to humanize healthcare strike a resonance with the medical fraternity? And, will they be able to bring in a brave new world of hope and honesty?
In addition to their working lives, the film also puts a spotlight on the clowns’, artistic beliefs and their fragile universes — bringing forth stories of personal grief, setbacks, and ambitions. This film questions human connection, and finding meaning and fulfilment in everyday life experiences.
